BRAIN FOOD: Avoiding a Straight Line
“And” stories have no movement or momentum. They are equivalent to running on a treadmill. Sentences and scenes appear, one after another, but the movement is straightforward and unsurprising. The momentum is unchanged.
But and therefore are words that signal change. The story was heading in one direction, but now it’s heading in another. We started out zigging, but now we are zagging. We did this, and therefore this new thing happened.
I think of it as continually cutting against the grain of the story. Rather than stretching a flat line from beginning to end, the storyteller should seek to create a serrated line cutting back and forth, up and down, along the path of the story. We are still headed in the same direction, but the best storytellers don’t take a straight line to get there.”

APPENDIX:
“Myself and Adam Clayton were driving through America, I think around the time of the Joshua Tree, and I'd met Johnny [Cash] a couple years before, and you know, I found out where he lived. He had a zoo in Nashville. He had a house in Nashville. And we go in to meet June [Carter], his missus and Johnny. And he shows us this table filled with plates of everything. Like, wow, we're coming, just the two of us and she said ‘No, honey, that's my cookbook. I'm just doing a photo sheet for my cookbook, we're in here!’
So we go into their kitchen and we sat there, myself and Adam and Johnny goes ‘Shall we pray?’ And Adam wasn't the praying type at that time, but he was like.. ‘Wow, it's Johnny Cash.’
So, you know, we all held hands and whatever and Johnny Cash made this beautiful poetic blessing. I just thought like, wow, of course he's touched. And then he just turns to Adam and goes ‘Sure miss the drugs though.’
