Quote(s) that popped for me this month:
“Most people don’t grow up. It’s too damn difficult. What happens is most people get older. That’s the truth of it. They honor their credit cards, they find parking spaces, they marry, they have the nerve to have children, but they don’t grow up. Not really. They get older. But to grow up costs the earth, the earth. It means you take responsibility for the time you take up, for the space you occupy. It’s serious business. And you find out what it costs us to love and to lose, to dare and to fail. And maybe even more, to succeed." Maya Angelou (American poet and civil rights activist)
“buy it right or buy it twice” Anon
“when changing your habits means challenging the tribe, change is unattractive. When changing your habits means fitting in with the tribe, change is very attractive.” James Clear (from Atomic Habits)

Flow the psychology of optimal experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
Giving this one go again.
”so how can we achieve this elusive goal that cannon be attained by a direct route?” My studies of the past quarter-century have convinced me that there is a way.”
Atomic Habits by James Clear
Still going with this.
“whenever possible, I leave my phone in a different room until lunch. When it’s right next to me, I’ll check it all morning for no reason at all. But when it’s in another room, I rarely think about it. And that friction is high enough that I won’t go get it without a reason. As a result, I get 3-4 hours each morning when I can work without interruption.”
LISTENING
Ever wondered what it would be like to row unsupported across the North Atlantic from New York to Galway? Ver much enjoying following this guys journey
“We’ve passed over the edge of the (2000m) continental shelf today; a nice little milestone to celebrate. Next target the Gulf Stream. I’ve started to regain my hunger and appetite for the first time since we left New York. I haven’t been sick surprisingly just had no grá for any food, bar a few jellies here and there. Feels good to feel hunger rise up & growl within me again. Remarkable what can be achieved with so little fuel over such a long period.”
How to build a world class network by Tim Ferriss
Tim Ferris’s life changed forever at SXSW in 2007. Here he talks about how playing the long game and not being a dick works wonders.
WATCHING
Martin Freeman’s best work yet I reckon. And he’s put in some decent shifts over the years. He’s also surrounded by a belter of a supporting cast. And the writing is *chefs kiss*
A story about a kid in a hood with some arrows in Sherwood forest causing mayhem. And it weaves in the storyline of a town still scarred from the miners strike. A slow burner, but once you’re in….
A Tiny Thought
Listening to the Deep Roots podcast has really got me thinking. The lads are currently rowing toward the Gulf Stream, so to have a more favourable wind at their back.
But they are reminding themselves it’s not the be all and end all. It’s not Valhalla. It will bring its own set of new and unique challenges.
It’s always tempting to reach for a promised land, a job, a house, a pair of shoes, an ideal bank balance. Maybe it’s not the land up ahead, it’s what we think we can pull from its soil.
MAKING
Last month I proudly mentioned I’d given myself a deadline of the end of July to block the world out for four or five days and just glue my arse to a chair, stop procrastinating and write.
The latest? I’ve extended that deadline to mid-August. I’m not procrastinating I swear.
Oh, and there is some still exciting news on #honesty which I’ll share next month.
